Horizontal jumping changes the load

Jumping upright means absorbing body weight plus acceleration through the ankles, knees and hips on every landing. Jumping horizontally against springs means the spring absorbs and returns most of that energy, and the joints see a small fraction of the load.

This is the reason jumpboards appear in post-operative and osteoarthritis programs where standing plyometrics would be contraindicated.

Spring load and board angle

Spring selection sets both resistance and rebound speed. Heavier springs return the carriage faster, which shortens the ground contact time and makes the work more plyometric; lighter springs slow it down and emphasize control.

Some boards angle adjustably, which changes the direction of push and lets you bias toward calves or quadriceps.

Fitting and compatibility

Jumpboards mount at the foot end, usually into the footbar sockets or a dedicated fitting. Compatibility is model-specific — a board from one machine rarely fits another.

On some reformers the footbar must be removed first; on others it drops below the board. Worth confirming before purchase, since it affects how quickly you can switch during a session.
