Judging reformer frame joinery
The short answer
Judge a reformer frame by how the rails meet the uprights. Mechanical joints — mortise and tenon in hardwood, welded or gusseted corners in metal — hold their geometry. Frames relying only on screws or bolts through flat faces develop play as those fixings work loose.
The diagonal test
Push firmly on one top corner of the frame in the direction of the opposite corner. A well-jointed frame moves as one object. A poorly jointed one flexes at the joints, and you will feel the give before you see it.
Do this on any machine you can physically inspect. It takes five seconds and tells you more than any specification sheet.
What good joints look like
In hardwood: mortise and tenon, or substantial dowelled joints, with glue and mechanical fixing together. The joint should carry load through wood-to-wood contact, not through the screws.
In metal: welded corners, or bolted joints with gussets that spread load across a larger area. A single bolt through two flat faces is the configuration that loosens.

Why it decides the machine’s life
Springs and ropes are consumables you replace. Frame geometry is not. Once a frame has racked out of square, the rails are no longer parallel, the carriage binds, and there is no economic repair.
This is why frame quality is the first thing to assess and the last thing you can compromise on.

- How do I check if a reformer frame is square?
- Measure both diagonals across the frame. A difference of more than about 1/8 inch means it has racked, which affects rail parallelism and carriage glide.
- Can a racked reformer frame be repaired?
- Rarely economically. Once the geometry has shifted, the rails are no longer parallel and the carriage binds. It is the main reason to walk away from a used machine.
- Are bolted frames worse than welded?
- Not inherently — a bolted joint with proper gussets is very strong. The weak configuration is a single fixing through two flat faces with nothing spreading the load.
