The diagonal test

Push firmly on one top corner of the frame in the direction of the opposite corner. A well-jointed frame moves as one object. A poorly jointed one flexes at the joints, and you will feel the give before you see it.

Do this on any machine you can physically inspect. It takes five seconds and tells you more than any specification sheet.

What good joints look like

In hardwood: mortise and tenon, or substantial dowelled joints, with glue and mechanical fixing together. The joint should carry load through wood-to-wood contact, not through the screws.

In metal: welded corners, or bolted joints with gussets that spread load across a larger area. A single bolt through two flat faces is the configuration that loosens.

  • Hardwood: mortise and tenon or heavy dowelled joints

  • Avoid: single fixings through flat faces
  • Check for even, consistent gaps at every joint

Why it decides the machine’s life

Springs and ropes are consumables you replace. Frame geometry is not. Once a frame has racked out of square, the rails are no longer parallel, the carriage binds, and there is no economic repair.

This is why frame quality is the first thing to assess and the last thing you can compromise on.
