Aluminum vs steel reformer frames
The short answer
Steel frames are the stiffest and cheapest per unit of rigidity but the heaviest and vulnerable to corrosion where the coating is damaged. Aluminum is lighter and corrosion-proof but needs a thicker section to match steel’s stiffness, which narrows the real-world difference.
Stiffness per pound is the trade
Steel is roughly three times stiffer than aluminum by volume, but also about three times denser. Designers exploit this by using thicker-walled aluminum extrusions, which recovers the stiffness at a lower total weight. A well-designed aluminum frame and a well-designed steel frame feel very similar in use.
Where they differ is what happens when a manufacturer economises. A thin steel tube still resists bending reasonably well; a thin aluminum extrusion does not. So frame flex is more common on cheap aluminum machines than cheap steel ones.
Corrosion and finish
Anodized aluminum is corrosion-proof through the section — a scratch exposes more aluminum oxide, not bare metal. Powder-coated steel is protected only by its coating, and a chip in a humid studio or a sweat-prone environment will eventually rust.
For studios this is a real maintenance consideration, particularly around footbars and spring anchors where hardware contact chips coatings.
