Sweat is the enemy of steel

Sweat is salty and mildly acidic, and it collects where hands and feet contact the frame — footbar, uprights, spring anchors. On powder-coated steel, any chip in the coating at those points becomes a corrosion site.

Wiping the frame down after sessions takes seconds and is the single most useful thing you can do for a steel machine.

Touch up chips promptly

Rust under a powder coating spreads laterally, lifting the coating as it goes. A chip the size of a pinhead can become a coin-sized blister within a year in a humid room.

Keep matching touch-up paint and use it as soon as you notice bare metal. On anodized aluminum this is unnecessary — a scratch exposes more aluminum oxide, not bare metal.

  • Wipe sweat off the frame after each session
  • Inspect footbar and spring anchor areas for coating chips
  • Touch up bare steel promptly with matching paint
  • Check bolts annually — metal frames loosen less than timber but still loosen
  • Anodized aluminum needs no corrosion protection

Where metal frames loosen

Bolted joints under repeated load can work loose over years, particularly at the footbar mounting where the load is highest and most variable.

An annual check with the correct tool is sufficient. Do not over-torque — stripping a threaded insert in aluminum is a much bigger problem than a slightly loose bolt.

Cleaning products to avoid

Abrasive cleaners dull anodized finishes and scratch powder coating, creating exactly the entry points for corrosion you are trying to avoid. Mild soap solution handles everything a reformer frame needs.

Avoid solvents entirely — some attack powder coatings and most do nothing that soap cannot.
