The gaps in a typical lifting program

Most strength training happens in the sagittal plane, bilaterally, through a moderate range. That builds a great deal of strength and leaves rotation, lateral stability and end-range control comparatively untrained.

Those gaps show up eventually as the positions that cannot be reached — the squat depth that will not come, the overhead position that requires lumbar extension to achieve, the single-leg work that reveals a large side-to-side difference.

Where Pilates fits

Thoracic mobility for overhead positions, hip mobility for squat depth, unilateral work for the asymmetries bilateral lifting hides, and anti-rotation work for trunk stability that heavy pressing does not develop.

None of these compete with the strength program for recovery, which is what makes the combination work.

Expect it to be harder than it looks

Strong lifters routinely find one-spring arm work difficult, because the demand is control rather than force. The constant spring tension removes the ability to use momentum or let the scapula disengage.

That gap between how much you can lift and how well you can control a light load is exactly the thing worth training.

Programming it alongside lifting

Two sessions a week, placed after lifting or on separate days. Pilates fatigues the small stabilisers that heavy lifting depends on for joint position, so scheduling it beforehand compromises the more important session.

Thirty minutes is plenty. This is supplementary work, and treating it as a third heavy session defeats the purpose.
