Static and reactive balance are different

Standing on one leg trains static balance. Recovering when something shifts underneath you trains reactive balance, and it is reactive balance that prevents falls in the real world.

A moving carriage under light spring is one of the few controlled ways to train reactive balance safely, which is why reformer work appears in fall-prevention programs.

A progression that works

Each step reduces support. Move on only when the previous step is comfortable rather than merely survivable, and always have a hand-hold available.

The three systems involved

Balance draws on vision, the inner ear, and proprioception from joints and muscles. Closing the eyes removes one input and forces the other two to work harder, which is why it is such an effective progression.

Proprioception is the most trainable of the three, and it is what Pilates addresses most directly.

Frequency beats intensity

Balance responds to short, frequent exposure. Two minutes daily produces more than twenty minutes weekly, and it can be done while brushing your teeth.

For older adults specifically, this is among the highest-value interventions available, and it costs nothing.
