Positioning it correctly in a program

Pilates does not build maximal strength or power efficiently — the load increments are too coarse and the movements too controlled. Treating it as a substitute for the strength program is the common mistake.

Where it earns its place is as low-fatigue supplementary work: trunk control, unilateral stability, mobility and movement quality, all of which support the primary training without competing with it for recovery.

Force transfer through the trunk

Nearly every athletic action transfers force between the lower and upper body through the trunk. A trunk that gives under load leaks force, and no amount of leg strength compensates for that.

Anti-rotation and anti-extension work on the reformer trains exactly this, and it does so with far less systemic cost than heavy compound lifting.

Where to place it in the week

After the primary session or on a separate day. Pilates fatigues the small stabilisers that heavy lifting relies on for joint position, so doing it beforehand compromises the more important session.

In season, two short sessions a week is usually the right dose. Off season, it can carry more volume alongside a strength block.

The realistic expectation

Pilates will not make an athlete faster or stronger directly. It makes them more robust, better able to maintain position under fatigue, and less likely to lose training time to preventable injury — which over a season is often the larger effect.
