The short answer
Before each session, check that springs are properly seated on both hooks, ropes show no fraying, the footbar is locked in position, shoulder rests are secure, and the carriage moves freely. It takes fifteen seconds and prevents almost every equipment-related incident.
The fifteen-second check
Nearly every equipment-related injury on a reformer traces to one of a very small number of causes, and all of them are visible before the session starts.
- Springs fully seated on both the carriage hook and the gear bar
- No fraying on either rope, particularly at the pulleys
- Footbar locked and tested in its set position
- Shoulder rests secure and correctly spaced
- Carriage moves freely with no binding
- Nothing stored under or beside the machine
Springs are the critical one
A spring that is not fully seated can release under load. That happens fast, the carriage moves suddenly, and the client is mid-exercise when it does.
Look at both ends of every attached spring, every time. This is the check that matters most and it takes three seconds.
In a studio, make it a routine
A teacher walking the room before class doing this check is the single most effective safety practice in a studio, and it also catches maintenance issues early.
Teach clients to check their own springs too. In a group class the teacher cannot verify eight machines mid-exercise, and clients who change their own springs need to know what correctly seated looks like.
Clear the surroundings
Boxes, poles and bags stored under or beside machines are a trip hazard in a room where people move barefoot between stations, and they interfere with carriage travel.
A designated storage area and a habit of using it prevents this. It is also why under-machine storage is worth avoiding even when space is tight.
