Choosing from this range

The traditional Pilates studio is built around five pieces of apparatus — reformer, Cadillac, chair, ladder barrel and spine corrector — and each does something the others cannot. Bought in that order, every addition expands the repertoire rather than duplicating it.

Most people stop at a reformer plus one other piece, which covers the large majority of what they will actually do. A full studio setup needs roughly 250–350 sq ft with working clearance.

What to check when building a setup

  • Reformer first — the broadest single-apparatus repertoire
  • Decide on a tower at reformer purchase; it rarely retrofits
  • Chair next — the most new repertoire per square foot
  • Total working footprint, not just the sum of the machines
  • Standardize models if buying several, for spares and teaching

Anniversary Allegro® 2 Collection — frequently asked questions

  • What Pilates equipment should I buy first?
A reformer. It covers the widest range of the repertoire of any single apparatus, and most taught programs assume access to one.
  • What is the best second piece of equipment?
A chair, for most people. It adds the most new repertoire per square foot once you already have a reformer.
  • How much space does a full studio setup need?
Roughly 250–350 sq ft to lay out a reformer, tower, chair, spine corrector and ladder barrel with working clearance.
