Spring tension is continuous feedback

A limb moving through air gives your nervous system relatively little information. The same limb moving against a spring gives continuous proportional feedback about position and speed, because resistance changes as the spring stretches.

That is a genuine mechanical reason Pilates improves position sense, not a mystical one.

Slow movement allows correction

At speed, a movement is executed from a pre-planned motor pattern with no time to adjust. Slowed down, there is time for sensory feedback to reach you and for you to correct mid-movement.

That correction loop is how motor patterns are actually changed, and it is why Pilates prescribes low repetitions performed precisely.

Why it transfers

Improved proprioception shows up outside the studio: better awareness of posture at a desk, earlier detection that a movement is going wrong, and more efficient movement generally.

This is the benefit long-term practitioners most often cite, and it is one of the harder ones to measure.
