The shoulder blade is the point

Most shoulder problems are control problems rather than strength problems — the scapula fails to move correctly on the ribcage as the arm moves. A spring under constant tension makes that failure obvious, because any loss of control shows up as a shrug or a wobble.

This is why reformer arm work often feels harder than the equivalent weight, even at lower load. You are being asked to control something a dumbbell lets you ignore.

A balanced upper-body sequence

Alternate pushing and pulling. Most people arrive with a pushing bias and need roughly twice as much pulling volume to balance it.

  • Seated arm pulls — 1 spring, 10 reps
  • Chest expansion, kneeling — 1 spring, 8 reps
  • Hug-a-tree, seated — 1 spring, 10 reps
  • Salute, kneeling — 1 spring, 8 reps
  • Triceps press, supine — 1 spring, 10 reps
  • Rowing series, seated — 1 spring, 8 reps each variation

Load lightly and slow down

One spring is the standard setting for nearly all of this, and it is enough. Adding spring usually means the larger muscles take over and the control benefit disappears.

Slow the eccentric. Letting the strap pull your arm back quickly wastes the half of the movement where scapular control is most challenged.
