What outdoor exposure actually does

Springs are the first casualty. Surface corrosion changes the spring rate and eventually causes failure under load, which on a loaded carriage is a genuine safety issue rather than an inconvenience.

Upholstery is next. UV breaks down vinyl within a single summer of direct exposure, and the resulting cracks let water into the foam. Hardwood frames move with humidity cycling, and steel hardware rusts wherever the coating is chipped.

Using equipment outside without storing it there

Taking a machine onto a deck for a session is perfectly reasonable, and pleasant. The requirements are a level surface, shade if the session is long, and bringing it back under cover afterwards.

Aluminum-framed machines suit this best — lighter to move and corrosion-proof, so an occasional soaking is not a problem.

  • Level, firm surface — decking boards flex more than you expect
  • Shade for the upholstery during the session
  • Wipe down and dry before storing
  • Never leave springs damp
  • Aluminum frames tolerate this far better than hardwood

Covered outdoor studios

A roofed, open-sided studio is a middle ground that works in dry climates, provided the machine is out of driving rain and direct sun. In humid or coastal environments, add a dehumidifier or accept a much shorter service life on springs and hardware.

Salt air in particular is aggressive on spring steel. Coastal installations should expect to replace springs on a considerably shorter cycle.
