The floor is usually the easy part

A concrete slab is the firmest base a reformer can have. Check it with a long level — most garage slabs have a slight fall toward the door, and if the machine sits across the fall, levelling feet will handle it.

Bare concrete is cold and unpleasant for mat work. Interlocking timber-effect vinyl over a damp-proof membrane is the usual fix and is inexpensive.

Temperature decides whether you use it

This is the actual determinant of a successful garage conversion. An uninsulated garage in winter is a room you will visit twice. Insulating the door and adding a heater that gets the space usable within ten minutes changes it entirely.

Summer matters too in hot climates — a west-facing garage can become unusable in the afternoon without ventilation.

  • Check slab level along the machine’s length
  • Damp-proof membrane plus vinyl or engineered timber over concrete
  • Insulate the garage door — the largest heat loss by far
  • Fast-response heating, not slow radiant
  • Ventilation for summer and for humidity control

Humidity and hardwood

Garages swing further in humidity than living space. Hardwood reformer frames respond to that over years, and upholstery and ropes degrade faster in persistent damp.

If the garage is prone to damp, an aluminum-framed machine is the more sensible choice — it is dimensionally unaffected either way.
