Specify for the taller user

Carriage travel cannot be extended, but a shorter user can always work within a longer travel. Specify the machine for the taller person and everything remains available to both.

The reverse does not work — a machine sized for the shorter user permanently truncates the taller one’s range.

Adjustment speed becomes a daily issue

With two users, the machine is readjusted before every session. Rope length, footbar height and shoulder rests all change, and a machine requiring tools for any of that becomes annoying quickly.

Look for tool-free adjustment on all three, ideally achievable in under a minute.

  • Carriage travel specified for the taller user
  • Footbar with genuinely high and low settings
  • Tool-free rope adjustment with wide range
  • Adjustable or removable shoulder rests
  • Note both users’ settings somewhere on the machine

Record both sets of settings

A small card or label with each person’s footbar position, rope length and shoulder rest spacing removes the guesswork and the friction of resetting before every session.

It sounds trivial and it is the difference between a shared machine being used twice a day and once.

Weight rating for the heavier user

As with height, specify to the more demanding case. Choose a machine rated at least 50 lb above the heavier user, not above the average.

This is the specification most likely to be omitted from a listing, so ask if it is not published.
