Feedback, not resistance

A pole weighs almost nothing, so it adds no meaningful load. What it does is make asymmetry visible: held horizontally in both hands, any difference in shoulder height or arm length shows up immediately as a tilt.

That makes it a teaching tool more than a training tool, and a genuinely useful one for anyone practicing without a teacher watching.

Common uses

Overhead shoulder mobility work, where the fixed hand spacing prevents compensating by widening the grip. Behind the back for chest opening. Across the shoulders for rotation work with a clear visual reference. Along the spine to check neutral alignment in standing.

Choosing one

Length matters more than material. It should be at least shoulder width plus a comfortable margin — around 4 ft suits most adults. Too short and you cannot use it across the shoulders or overhead comfortably.

Wooden poles feel better in the hand; aluminum is lighter and more durable. Either is fine.

The alignment check

Holding a pole vertically along the spine — touching the back of the head, the upper back and the sacrum — is a quick postural check anyone can do alone. Gaps tell you where the curves are exaggerated.

It is a rough measure rather than an assessment, but as immediate feedback in a home practice it is genuinely useful.
